What Should Be in Your Kid's School Bag? A Practical Checklist
Short answer: a durable, well-fitted bag, a lunch box that actually keeps food fresh, a labelled water bottle, a pencil pouch, and one or two comfort items — that's it. Everything past that is extra weight on a small back. Here's the checklist we'd actually hand a parent.
1. A bag sized to the child, not the syllabus
The single most common mistake is buying a bag "to grow into." An oversized bag with adjustable but ill-fitting straps digs into shoulders and throws off posture over a full school year. Look for a bag with padded, adjustable straps and a main compartment big enough for books without needing to be crammed — a rainbow-print preschool backpack works well for younger kids precisely because it's sized for them, not for an adult's idea of "enough room."
2. A lunch bag that isn't an afterthought

Pouches pack flatter, weigh less, and don't crack the way hard plastic boxes eventually do. If your child insists on a specific character or color, that's fine — the format matters more than the print.
5. One thing that makes the bag theirs
A small keychain, a favourite sticker, a specific color choice — kids are far more likely to keep their own bag organized when they had a say in what it looks like. It's a small thing that pays off at pickup time when they're not digging through three identical navy backpacks.
What to leave out
Extra toys, more stationery than the class actually requires, and "just in case" items add up fast. A school bag that's easy for a child to open, find things in, and close again beats a fully-stocked one that's a struggle to zip.
